Does anyone plan to have a career in the incenve industry? Perhaps now, with college and university curricula including events, meengs and other related subjects, it is possible. But when I started off my career, I had no idea what "incenve travel" was all about.
What was your first role in the industry? I started my career at the Meridien Hotel in Montreal and was soon promoted from "Tour & Travel Sales Manager" to "Corporate & Incenve Sales Manager". My boss said, "you need to join SITE (which I had never heard of before) immediately". I did join, and a few years later, found myself in the role of Chair of the Host Commiee for the SITE Global Conference in Montreal. In the meanme, I joined JPdL, a young and dynamic PCO (Professional Congress Organizer) and DMC (Desnaon Management Company) where I eventually became part owner and where I spent the next 2-1/2 decades of my career. I maintained my SITE Canada membership throughout. What is the biggest change that you have seen in the industry since you first started?
This is difficult to answer because so much has changed. I would say technology and terrorism are the two that come to mind. The impact of technology on our industry is obvious, from apps to o n l i n e regi st ra o n to t h e wi d e ra n ge o f programmable LED lights and visual effects that can be brought into events. Who would have thought that phones would become ubiquitous and become an integral part of events? 8
