THE GLITCH A BBC journalist had been tapped to host from the main stage in Scotland, as well as conduct some live interviews and do a 20-minute summary at the end of the day. A couple of days before the event, the journalist got very ill with COVID. "Without a voice to tie it all together, there was a real risk that it would be very cold, very disjointed," says Worline. So, while keeping in mind the "warm, curious tone" that the journalist had been hired to deliver, Worline, "got out my video camera and studio lights and put together prompts for myself, to introduce each conversation. I wasn't intending to be featured in this event at all other than appearing at the very beginning in one conversation." Instead of the journalist summary, the event's governing board decided to circle back to the art theme and the day ended with a poem. Curators from the University of Chicago recruited artists to contribute artwork—paintings, sculptures, video and performance—that aligned with the event theme. PheedLoop's exhibit hall was repurposed to create a virtual gallery space where attendees could learn about the pieces and connect with the artists via video. Some of the "booths" were allotted to relevant organizations. "It became a real kind of change-maker resource gallery, as well as an art gallery," says Worline. Given that the sentiments in Dr. Seuss' The Lorax are in perfect alignment with the event's theme, the team decided to produce a crowdsourced pre-recorded reading of the text. "It became really messy," says Worline. A board member reached out to a filmmaker who was thrilled to take on the project. "With her artistic vision, it transformed to a real piece of art. It was astounding, the way that it turned out." GRAPHIC RECORDING SHOWCASE Artist Ronna Alexander captured the live conversations in downloadable visual summaries.
