As Canada's version of Silicon Valley
North—Ontario's Region of Waterloo is a
hotbed of technological innovation in the
province. The range of intellectual capital
in the city is breathtaking—the University
of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, the
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics
(Stephen Hawking holds the title of Distin-
guished Research Chair) and the Centre for
International Governance and Innovation
(CIGI)—an independent, non-partisan think
tank—all call the area home. Google Cana-
da has just opened a large office and Black-
Berry and Opentext were founded here.
The region is easily accessible from the
401, located just one hour west of Toronto.
Home to the Region of Waterloo Interna-
tional Airport, which offers daily flights to
Chicago, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal.
Regular service on VIA Rail is also available
from Union Station.
